Nirvana Means Extinction - Stephen Wolinsky

Nirvana Means Extinction - Stephen Wolinsky

Following his mentor, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj's basic premise, "All you can teach is understanding, the rest comes on its own", Dr. Stephen Wolinsky takes us on a three hour excursion traversing the roots of Advaita-Vedanta, neuroscience, philosophy, linguistics and tantric yoga, to provide a long neglected understanding which lies at the core of all of these teachings; "All spirituality and psychology are dependent on the existence of a separate independent individual self." BUT what if this self is an illusion, a product of the nervous system, a miss-perception, then not only does the "I" disappear, but so does the foundation and basic premise of all spirituality, spiritual paths and psychology. Thanks to Mark for sharing these links.

Quiet Heart Spirit Wind - Richard Warner

Quiet Heart Spirit Wind - Richard Warner
Music for Relaxation both Quiet Heart and Spirit Wind were originally released on cassette as separate albums more than 20 years ago. Now, Richard Warner's ethereal and calming improvisations are available in a special 2 - CD set (a remastered repackaging of two releases from 1982's Quiet Heart and 1984's Spirit Wind) that features four additional bonus tracks (two per disc). Quiet Heart is an album of subtle bamboo/alto flute harmonies performed solo by Warner. The music is soulful and spiritual, capturing the essence of calm and stillness. Spirit Wind is also comprised of wandering flute tones; only in this case they are accented by the soothing sound of crystal glasses that were tuned by being filled with water to achieve certain pitches. In addition to the bonus tracks, the music also features 20 - bit remastering for superior sound quality.

The Confucian Analects

The Confucian Analects
The Confucian Analects (literally translated as "discussion over Confucius' words") collects a record of the philosophy, discussions and day to day life of the great Chinese scholar Confucius (551-479 BCE). Coming into existence during a particularly war-torn period in Chinese history know as the Spring and Autumn period, this text came about at a time of newfound literacy and burgeoning awareness in ancient Chinese thought. Probably written posthumously over a period of many years by his disciples, Confucious' main values of propriety, righteousness, loyalty and filial piety are repeated throughout the book via various examples and conversations. This code of ethics has come to form the backdrop of Chinese conduct and is a core text in modern Chinese education.

Kundun - Philip Glass

Kundun - Philip Glass
This is Glass' first bigtime burst into recognition in the filmmusic world --the score for Kundun, as of the end of 1997, has won the Los Angeles Film Critics nod for best score, and has been nominated for best score by the Golden Globes. Glass is a classical-based composer who caught the interest of Martin Scorsese many years ago, and Glass' Buddhist faith and Tibetan knowledge made him the perfect choice to score Kundun.

What's coincidental about this score is that John Williams' score for the Dalai Lama film Seven Years in Tibet was but a month old when this one was released. The two, naturally, are perfect for comparison. They both feature Gyuto Monks as the centerpiece of their ethnic needs. Glass adds a much pronounced emphasis on certain instruments that create perhaps a superior cultural touch.
