Ajahn Geoffrey (Thanissaro Bikkhu) - Dhamma Talks
Thanissaro Bhikkhu (Geoffrey DeGraff) (1949 - ) is an American Buddhist monk of the Thai forest kammatthana tradition. After graduating from Oberlin College in 1971 with a degree in European Intellectual History, he traveled to Thailand, where he studied meditation under Ajahn Fuang Jotiko, himself a student of the late Ajahn Lee.

He was ordained in 1976 and lived at Wat Dhammasathit, where he remained following his teacher's death in 1986. In 1991 he traveled to the hills of San Diego County, U.S., where he helped Ajaan Suwat Suwaco establish Wat Mettavanaram (Metta Forest Monastery). He was made abbot of the monastery in 1993. Bryan Kest's Power Yoga

Bryan Kest's Power Yoga
Anyone wanting to get in shape like the stars need go no further than Bryan Kest's videos. Kest teaches wildly popular yoga classes in Santa Monica, California--so popular that stars like Rhea Perlman, David Duchovny, and Elisabeth Shue willingly sweat alongside the hoi polloi in Kest's packed, ancient loft studio. If you don't happen to be in the neighborhood, not to worry: Kest's yoga videos are nearly as good as being there. Volume 1: Energize is a beginner level class that nonetheless is smartly designed to provide challenges for all levels of users. Kest's Jersey-boy voice at first seems in contrast to the serene environment and inner-peace objectives, but it gradually becomes soothing and hypnotic in its own right. Stretches and strengthening moves are alternated with just enough repose to keep even first timers on track. After mastering Vol. 1, practitioners can go on to Volume 2: Tone or Volume 3: Sweat to further challenge themselves. As long as you keep in mind Kest's personal mantra--"If you're doing the best you can, you're doing this class perfectly"--you and this video should have many satisfying years of workouts together.

Sharanam: Sacred Chants of Devotion - Sudha and Maneesh De Moor

Sharanam: Sacred Chants of Devotion - Sudha and Maneesh De Moor
The enchanting voice of Sudha and the meditative compositions of Maneesh de Moor bring to us serenity with this new release of Sanskrit devotional Chants. Sharanam means to 'take refuge in' or to 'surrender to' - to bow at the feet of that which is our Creator, our Guide and our True Essence. This music is an offering to that Divine Presence which is everywhere, in and around us..
Sudha's voice is soft and pure with a touch of innocence, which pairs well with Maneesh de Moor's Asian - inspired backdrops of keyboards and light percussion. The music is gentle and introspective, offering a deep, resonant atmosphere for peaceful contemplation, meditative Yoga and healing work.

Satori (Music For Yoga And Meditation) - Riley Lee

Satori (Music For Yoga And Meditation) - Riley Lee
Riley Lee is one of the Western world's leading experts and artists on the shakuhachi, an ancient Japanese flute. In the new millennium, there are several artists performing on ritualistic instruments like the Tibetan singing bowls and bells, the didgeridoo, cedar flutes, pan pipes, and the shakuhachi. Only a handful of artists were creating music in this style. Gabriel Lee - no relation - accompanies Riley on the koto, a 13-string Japanese zither. This is remarkable acoustic ambience. The shakuhachi has a distinct texture and the atmospheres are unique, although there is a vague similarity to the texture of a Native American flute..

The CD's liner notes define satori as "the indescribable experience of sudden, intuitive spiritual realization." That may be, yet unless you are a serious student of yoga or a fan of its ancient musical traditions, you may struggle to reach such a state while listening to these improvisations for shakuhachi flute and koto. Satori, originally recorded in 1983, seems best suited to serious - minded yoga practitioners and those who prefer to adorn their meditative states with only the most minimal of audio embellishments. For such people, this disc could be the answer to prayers...

The Way of the White Clouds - Lama Anagarika Govinda

The Way of the White Clouds - Lama Anagarika Govinda

The classic narrative of a spiritual pilgrimage to Tibet, with a new introduction by Robert Thurman.

Lama Anagarika Govinda was one of the last foreigners to journey through Tibet before the Chinese invasion of 1950. A devoted Buddhist and a spokesman for Tibetan culture, Govinda's luminous and candid account is a spectacular and gloriously poetic story of exploration and discovery, and a sensitive and lucid interpretation of Tibetan traditions. Robert Thurman's perceptive new introduction to the volume places Govinda's writings in historical context and opens a new door on understanding Tibet, Buddhism, and the life of a remarkable man who, as Thurman remarks, is "undoubtedly one of the West's greatest minds of the twentieth century, a member of the pantheon that includes Einstein, Heisenberg, Wittgenstein, Solzhenitsyn, Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama."

The Story of Chinese Zen - Huai-Chin Nan, Nan Huai-Chin

The Story of Chinese Zen - Huai-Chin Nan, Nan Huai-Chin
Nan presents the development of Zen thought in China as influenced by Chinese culture?meaning primarily literature and politics?and also highlights the influence of Taoism and Confucianism on the particular form Buddhism took there. Nan is at his best when discussing specific Zen teachings. But he often does not present enough background on Chinese history and literature to enable the reader easily to follow his thoughts on their influence. Also, Nan's preference is clearly for Mahayana Buddhism over Theravada, which he refers to with the pejorative term Hinayana (lesser vehicle). The book would be best used along with other books that present Chinese history, such as Heinrich Dumoulin's two-volume Zen Buddhism: A History of India and China (Macmillian, 1988-89). Recommended as a thorough presentation of several aspects of Zen in China, as long as the library has some books on Chinese history to provide background.

The Story of Chinese Zen begins with the premise that the climate during Shakyamuni's founding of Buddhism in India ultimately influenced the differences behind Hinayana and Mahayana thought, practice, and methods of seeking realization. From there - beginning with its transmission to China - Master Nan outlines the Zen School, exploring influences on the development of Zen before the early T'ang dynasty, different means of studying Zen and pursuing "the heart and goal of Zen". He explores the relationship between Zen and neo-Confucianism and the inseparability of religion and Zen from Chinese literature and philosophy, especially Taoism.

The Positive Psychology of Buddhism and Yoga: Paths to A Mature Happiness

The Positive Psychology of Buddhism and Yoga: Paths to A Mature Happiness
In a manner never before published, this book presents both Buddhism and Yoga and relates them to contemporary Western psychology. Although existing books begin with advanced concepts, such as emptiness or egolessness, The Positive Psychology of Buddhism and Yoga begins with very basic concepts and avoids the exotic and so called "mystical" notions. Levine emphasizes the goals of Buddhism and Yoga and the methods they employ to achieve those goals.

This book is divided into four sections. The first deals with Buddhism, the second with Yoga, and the third describes aims and practices in Western clinical psychology. The fourth section is a workshop on handling anger. The central lesson of the first three sections is that one can improve one's life by changing one's self. This fourth section applies this lesson and the methods of the three preceding sections to handling one's own anger. Overall the book is rich with Eastern tales and illustrative anecdotes. These concrete examples vividly illuminate the general conceptual presentation.

Levine shows not only the basic concerns of Buddhism and Yoga and how intensely practical their methods are but how these concerns and methods relate to those of modern Western psychology. Application to daily living is emphasized throughout.

The Zen in Modern Cosmology

The Zen in Modern Cosmology
According to Modern Cosmology, our Universe came from a primordial state 13.7 billion years ago, with no matter and very little energy. In other words, it was almost empty. Where do the stars and galaxies, and everything else in the present universe come from then? This captivating book provides an answer to this question, and explains the observations and evidence behind the assertion of an almost empty primordial universe. Aimed at a general audience, it assumes no prior knowledge of astronomy or physics. The emptiness of the primordial universe is reminiscent of the emptiness in Zen Buddhism. The similarities and differences of these two forms of emptiness are explored.

Early Buddhist Metaphysics: The Making of a Philosophical Tradition

Early Buddhist Metaphysics: The Making of a Philosophical Tradition
This book provides a philosophical account of the major doctrinal shift in the history of early Theravada tradition in India: the transition from the earliest stratum of Buddhist thought to the systematic and allegedly scholastic philosophy of the Pali Abhidhamma movement. Conceptual investigation into the development of Buddhist ideas is pursued, thus rendering the Buddha’s philosophical position more explicit and showing how and why his successors changed it. Entwining comparative philosophy and Buddhology, the author probes the Abhidhamma’s shift from an epistemologically oriented conceptual scheme to a metaphysical worldview that is based on the concept of dhamma. She does so in terms of the Aristotelian tradition and vis-à-vis modern philosophy, exploiting Western philosophical literature from Plato to contemporary texts in the fields of philosophy of mind and cultural criticism.

This book not only demonstrates that a philosophical inquiry into the conceptual foundations of early Buddhism can enhance our understanding of what philosophy and religion are qua thought and religion; it also shows the value of fresh perspectives for traditional Buddhology. Combining philosophically rigorous investigation and Buddhological research criteria, Early Buddhist Metaphysics fills a significant gap in Buddhist scholarship’s treatment of the conceptual development of the Abhidhamma.

The Notion of Ditthi in Theravada Buddhism: The Point of View

The Notion of Ditthi in Theravada Buddhism: The Point of View
The notion of 'view' or 'opinion' (ditthi) as an obstacle to 'seeing things as they are' is a central concept in Buddhist thought. This book considers the two ways in which the notion of views is usually understood. Are we to understand right-view as a correction of wrong-views (the opposition understanding), or is the aim of the Buddhist path the overcoming of all views, even right-view (the no-views understanding)? This book argues that neither approach is correct. Instead, it suggests that the early texts do not understand right-view as a correction of wrong-view, but as a detached order of seeing, completely different from the attitude of holding to any view, wrong or right. Claiming that by the term 'right-view' we should understand an order of seeing which transcends all views, this work is a valuable addition to the study of Buddhist philosophy.

Enlightenment Blues - Andre van der Braak

Enlightenment Blues - Andre van der Braak
Enlightenment Blues is Andre van der Braak's compelling first hand account of his relationship with a prominent spiritual teacher. It chronicles both the author's spiritual journey and disenchantment as well the development of a missionary and controversial community around the teacher. It powerfully exposes the problems and necessities of disentanglement from a spiritual path.

"Enlightenment Blues is the account of a young man's sincere and protracted struggle to transform his life according to the teachings of the American guru Andrew Cohen. Ruthlessly honest and unsettling, Andre van der Braak gives a vivid first-hand account of an uncompromising experiment in establishing Indian spirituality in a modern Western setting. This story is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the allure and pitfalls of surrendering one's authority in the hope of spiritually transforming the world" Stephen Batchelor, Author Buddhism without Beliefs

"Narrated with the psychological subtlety and drama of a good novel, Enlightenment Blues is a precise, profound dissection of the guru-devotee relationship. It should be required reading for all who are currently engaged in or considering studying under a spiritual teacher." John Horgan, author of Rational Mysticism

Zen Classics: Formative Texts in the History of Zen Buddhism

Zen Classics: Formative Texts in the History of Zen Buddhism

This is a companion volume to The Koan and The Zen Canon, by the same editors. The first volume collected original essays on koan collections, recorded sayings of individual masters, histories of major schools, and compilations of monastic regulations. The second focuses on the early history of Zen in China, providing overview assessments of many of the most important canonical texts that set the Zen tradition in motion throughout East Asia. Zen Classics will follow that historical movement, focusing primarily on texts from Korea and Japan that brought this Buddhist movement to fruition. Although enormously diverse in style and structure all of the texts and genres of texts considered here were fundamental to the unfolding of Zen in East Asia. The range of genres reveals the varieties of Zen practice, from rules of daily practice to sermons and meditation manuals. The all new essays in this volume will be contributed by an international team of distinguished scholars of Buddhism. It is aimed at broad audience including college students, Zen practitioners, and scholars of East Asian history, religion, and culture, as well as specialists in Buddhist history.

Lost Civilizations: Tibet - The End of Time

Isolated within the towering sanctuary of the Himalayas, Tibet developed a culture unique in the history of world civilization. Steeped in the mystical ideals of Buddhism, the Tibetans centered their lives on selfless altruism and the perception of the world as an endlessly repeating cycle of life, death and rebirth. Now, journey to the roof of the world as this real-life Shangri-la collides head-on with the ruthless realities of the modern age. And encounter a civilization that today is not yet lost, but balanced on the verge of collapse, facing what may literally be "The End of Time."

Traversing the highest mountain passes on Earth, enter a kingdom so remote it was virtually unknown to outsiders until recent times. Experience an enigmatic way of life that challenges the very concept of western civilization. Discover how, as the world's last surviving theocracy, Tibetans voluntarily abandoned their warlike past to worship their ruler, the Dalai Lama, as the living manifestation of god on Earth. And witness the outside world's impact on a people totally devoted to the quest for peaceful coexistence, inner knowledge and the ultimate spiritual bliss of nirvana. Above all, see how the great arc of civilization's rise and fall is more than an artifact of history's distant past, but a living process that continues today in this ethereal, otherworldly mountain domain.

Are you ready to lose your world? Because true awakening will not fit into the world as you imagine it or the self you imagine yourself to be. It is perfect unity free of all reference points, with nowhere to stand and nothing to grab hold of. It has never been spoken, never been written, never been imagined. It is not hidden, but in plain view. Cease to cherish opinions and it stands before your very eyes.

Lullaby For The Moon : Japanese Music For Koto And Shakuhachi

Lullaby For The Moon : Japanese Music For Koto And Shakuhachi
Featured here are the works of several modern composers writing for the koto and shakuhachi.

For anyone unfamiliar with these instruments, which are basic staples in Japanese music: The koto is a plucked-string instrument with silk strings and movable bridges to manipulate the pitch, played with finger picks. The shakuhachi is a magnificent flute made from the bottom of a stalk of bamboo, including the root. It takes two decades to master this instrument, which can play scales and microtones. The sound of air through bamboo is unlike any other instrument.

In combination, the koto and shakuhachi are magnificent and these compositions (including some variations on "Sakura," a very familiar theme in Japanese music) are premium quality, falling together like some act of nature.
One of the reviews below likened this music to the sound of rain falling on leaves; for some reason I think of snowfall (especially with 'Komoriuta,' which you can listen to above).

No matter. This is a delicious introduction to Asian music, and a fine entree for connoisseurs.

His appreciation for both the people and the music comes through in this pairing of flute and harp. The album was recorded in France with special arrangements made by the composer Akio Yashiro. There are no notes concerning the cover art, but it is a wonderful work in the traitional Japanese style. Muted colors and simple lettering, it works very well.

Daoism in History: Essays in Honor of Liu Ts'un-yan

The study of the religion of Daoism has flourished over the last decade in China, Japan and the West. A new generation of scholars has appeared who are rewriting our understandings of Daoism, which is perceived to be 'China's indigenous high religion'. Daoism in History brings together essays by some of the leading scholars from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK, France, Italy and the US, thus presenting new and important research in the field. These essays honour one of the pioneers of Daoist Studies, Emeritus Professor Liu Ts'un-yan. His essay "Was Celestial Master Zhang a Historical Figure?", a major work, which addresses one of the pivotal questions in the entire history of Daoism is the final essay in this book. A Chinese character glossary as well as a bibliography and index conclude the book.
The field of Daoist studies is now recognised as one of the most vital areas of research in Chinese history and the history of religions. Daoism in History is a major contribution to the area.

Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism - Chogyam Trungpa

Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism - Chogyam Trungpa
The now classic Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism is the record of two series of lectures given by Trungpa Rinpoche in 1970-71. "First discussed are the various ways in which people involve themselves in spiritual materialism, the many forms of self-deception into which aspirants may fall. After this tour of the sidetracks along the way, the broad outlines of the true spiritual path are discussed. The approach presented is a classical Buddhist one—not in a formal sense, but in the sense of presenting the heart of the Buddhist approach to spirituality. Although the Buddhist way is not theistic, it does not contradict the theistic disciplines. Rather the differences between the ways are a matter of emphasis and method. The basic problems of spiritual materialism are common to all spiritual disciplines.

JINANANDA: The Middle Way - the Story of Buddhism

JINANANDA: The Middle Way - the Story of Buddhism
General interest in Buddhism has never been higher. The story and teachings of a man who lived 2500 years ago have a special resonance for us today, perhaps because he taught a way of life that was not based on belief in a creator god but rather on personal experience. 'Test my words for yourself,' he said.

But what lies behind those distinctive images of the Buddha, seated with unshakeable poise, with eyes half-closed and a slight smile? How did Buddhism develop, from the austere style which governed the life of the yellow-robed monks in ancient India to the more colourful, even magical expression of Tibet? And where does Zen fit in?

In The Middle Way. Jinananda. a Western-born Buddhist, divides the subject into The Three Jewels - The Buddha (a life of the historical figure), The Dharma (an account of the fundamental teachings) and The Sangha (the disciples, both lay and monastic throughout the world). With extracts from some of main sutras, Jinananda explains the key concepts that lie behind a system of thought and behaviour which, like the universe itself, is continuously expanding.

You Are the Eyes of the World - Longchenpa
An introduction to the Dzogchen teachings by one of the greatest Nyingma masters, demonstrating how everyday experience is in actuality nothing more than the dance of awareness.

Longchenpa's Jewel Ship: a Guide to the Meaning of Pure and Total Presence, the Creative Energy of the Universe`, presents a method for discovering awareness everywhere, all the time. This book does not discuss how to turn ordinary life off, it does not describe how to create beautiful spiritual experiences, but it does show how to live within the source of all life - the unified field where experience takes place. CONSCIOUSNESS AT THE CROSSROADS: Conversations with the Dalai Lama on Brain Science and Buddhism

Again my thanks to Smokey for more wonderful ebooks.

CONSCIOUSNESS AT THE CROSSROADS: Conversations with the Dalai Lama on Brain Science and Buddhism

Organized by the Mind and Life Institute, this discussion addresses some of the most troublesome questions that have driven a wedge between Western science and religion. Consciousness at the Crossroads resulted from meetings of the Dalai Lama and a group of eminent neuroscientists and psychiatrists. Is the mind an ephemeral side-effect of the brain's physical processes? Are there forms of consciousness so subtle that science has not yet identified them? How does consciousness happen? The Dalai Lama's incisive, clear approach and open-minded pursuit of knowledge both challenges and offers inspiration to Western scientists.

Wonders of the Natural Mind, New Edition: The Essence of Dzogchen in the Native Bon Tradition of Tibet

My thanks to Smokey for these great books.

Wonders of the Natural Mind, New Edition: The Essence of Dzogchen in the Native Bon Tradition of Tibet

Based on the fundamental Zhang Zhung Nyan Gyud, a Bon text, the author presents the main points of Dzogchen, its relation to various systems within Bon, and some reflections on Dzogchen in the West. Although the Dzogchen teachings are principally familiar to Westerners through the teachings of the Nyingma school, they also survive in the ancient Bon religion of Tibet. In offering these teachings Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche provides the reader with a vivid and engaging portrait of Bon culture as he interweaves the teachings with his personal life story.

The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep - Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche

The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep - Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche
This book gives detailed instructions for dream yoga, including foundational practices done during the day. In the Tibetan tradition, the ability to dream lucidly is not an end in itself, rather it provides an additional context in which one can engage in advanced and effective practices to achieve liberation. Dream yoga is followed by sleep yoga, also known as the yoga of clear light. It is a more advanced practice where the goal is to stay conscious during deep sleep, when the gross mind and senses cease to operate and subtle mind is actualised. Most Westerners do not even consider this depth of awareness a possibility, yet it is well known in Tibetan Buddhist and Bon traditions.

Sacred Tibetan Chants from the Great Prayer Festival - Tibetan Monks Of Drepung Loseling Monastery

Sacred Tibetan Chants from the Great Prayer Festival - Tibetan Monks Of Drepung Loseling Monastery
An ample and well-written text details the purpose behind these ritual chants, among which a rare cycle is heard in its entirety. The remoteness of Tibet created and preserved a musical practice which is absolutely unique. For those familiar with Tibetan chanting, it will be a welcome offering to hear the chanting from this once-vital monastery. Once being the keyword, as the text underscores the genocide and destruction vented on the peaceful Tibetean nation by the occupying Chinese, a horrific tragedy which continues... The monastery, or better, its survivors, went into exile in India.
